Vulnerability scanning for ISO 27001

ISO 27001:2022 moved technical vulnerability management into control 8.8, and certification auditors expect to see it running as a process, not a one-time check. That means a scanner, a schedule, and records showing findings were handled. This page explains what the control asks for, what the auditor wants in the evidence folder, and how to have it in place before the audit.

What ISO 27001 actually says

Annex A control 8.8, Management of technical vulnerabilities, requires that information about technical vulnerabilities of information systems in use is obtained, the organization's exposure is evaluated, and appropriate measures are taken. ISO 27002 guidance describes regular vulnerability scanning of systems, prioritization by risk, and timely patching as the way to do it. The old 2013 reference was A.12.6.1; certification bodies now audit against 8.8.

What your auditor needs to see

  • A documented vulnerability management procedure that names the scanner and the cadence.
  • Scan reports for every asset in the ISMS scope, external and internal.
  • Risk-rated findings linked to the risk treatment plan.
  • Patching or exception records with dates.
  • Rescan evidence closing out the findings.
